Often we get approached by clients/patients that would love to give a massage to their partner or family members. One of the basic principles of good massage is intention. Basically, if you touch or massage someone with the intent of making them feel better, they will probably feel better, regardless of your training or technique. Often this can be one of the hardest concepts to grasp without getting too new age. My lead teacher at school used to try to drill it into our heads and it was the hardest thing to accept because it was almost too simple to be effective or true. In brief, there are many forms of energy and “energy work”. Our bodies are full of electrical energies, whatever you call it Chi, Prana, life-force or whatever. There are hundreds of massage and bodywork energy treatment techniques. Some of the more common might be Reaki, quantum Touch, yoga and various forms of breath work. Often times, I will be giving a therapeutic massage pain treatment on a person with a difficult pain, issue or trauma and seeming to get nowhere fast, and then I consciously back off of the physical aspects of the massage, stretching or bodywork and just breath. Just breathe and focus your attention to the area you are working on. Its that simple. No need to get all complex or spiritual, thats all it takes. Try it the next time you are massaging your significant other, youll be amazed. Remember, if you have fun and the person receiving the massage has fun, it was a success! If you are in the Fort Lauderdale area, make sure to contact us if youd like to learn more in person and join us for our upcoming couples massage class. Now go out there and touch someone you love and have fun!
