This just in from the “Institute for Integrative Healthcare Studies” “More and more bodyworkers are being recruited to work in a variety of health-inspired settings, including drug treatment programs. By being familiar with the plight of cocaine addiction and withdrawal, massage therapists are more qualified for the surprisingly rewarding job of helping people quit cocaine.” Wow. Yet another way that massage can help the people who need help the most. When I read the article this morning, I couldnt help but reflect on the reasons why I got into massage therapy in the first place. It’s about helping ALL the people who have somehow fallen through the cracks. Sure, we still work on a few folks that just want to feel good for an hour, but many people dont even realize the possibilities for helping conditions in which their traditional Western doctor may have no magic pill for. For those struggling with addiction, they generally qualify. While many of us may be guilty of thinking “well, they started, they can just stop” It is more complex than that. It’s truly amazing and very, very rewarding as a therapist when we can help change someones life for the better when for whatever reason, they have went down the wrong path with their health, and that includes those who are addicted. Past studies have shown that massage can help with various forms of addiction from food addiction to alcohol addiction as well. For anyone interested, or knows someone in need, please read on, the full article is great. http://www.integrative-healthcare.org/mt/archives/2010/04/bodywork_for_qu.html?eml=mpu76b
